The Journey Begins
Six weeks ago, the first meeting of the inaugural Newport City Ladies football team coaching staff took place. Two men, one woman, full of enthusiasm, ambition and drive to create something brand new and successful. Three weeks ago, we had our the first training session and the first six ladies signed to the club. There followed four more a week later and then a further six . With interest and excitement growing and more players expected at the next training session, the rise in such a short space of time has been meteoric.
Sunday 4th August saw the next step in the evolution with our first friendly match against Hereford’s Tupsley Ladies. What a start it was, thirteen excited women traveled, one got injured in the warm-up, and within four mins of kick off Michaela Butler had scored the first ever Senior Ladies team goal. This was followed by further goals from Jo Varley, Renee Connor x 2, a hat-trick from Amy Doswell but the first ever hat-trick for the club from Monique Bux. A further goal was added and given as an own goal but could easily have been attributed to Ruth Vibes. A slight dip in concentration at the start of the second half saw one poor goal and a long range “hit and hope” for the opposition ruin the clean sheet for keeper Jen (fresh off her Welsh performance in the Homeless World Cup).
The final score saw Newport win 11-2, and the journey had begun in earnest. Special mentions for “Man of the Match” McQueen – Oliver and Sam Hiscocks who were immense but not a single lady could be faulted on the day. Roll on next week.
