Newport City continued their pre-season preparations in fine form following a convincing performance against Cardiff Bay at Llanrumney Sports Fields in a game that was played in difficult conditions.

The opening half turned out to be a significantly cagey affair as both sides struggled to deal with the heavy wind and rain, leaving the pitch in a particularly poor state. The poor conditions led to a heavily restricted amount of clear goal action, with the first meaningful opportunity coming five minutes before the interval when City took the lead. A low strike by new signing Nathan Blackie from the edge of the six yard box was saved by the Bay keeper, but the resulting rebound was tucked into the bottom left hand corner of the net by Nathan Doe as City ended a forgettable first half on a high.

The weather conditions improved after break and so did City as they ran rampant during the second half. The Steelmen doubled their lead two minutes after the restart when Blackie produced a defence splitting pass to Doe who made no mistake by scoring his second goal of the game after slotting the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Meanwhile Blackie soon got on the scoresheet himself on the hour mark after been sent through on goal before rounding the keeper, calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.

City scored a fourth goal in the 67th minute when Doe completed his hat-trick after being set free down the left hand channel before breaking clean through into the area and sending the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net. City continued to threaten and  twice came close again soon after through Bernardin Fetahi and Blackie who saw their respective efforts saved and drift narrowly wide.

A lapse of concentration from the Steelmen in the 90th minute allowed Cardiff Bay to score a consolation goal following a bullet header from a corner. City responded well to the minor setback and added a fifth goal immediately afterwards when Fetahi was sent through clear on goal and nutmegged the keeper from close range to put the icing on the cake for his side.

FT 1-5

Once again it was another impressive result for Newport City as they displayed a five star performance which will continue to boost their confidence as the new season draws nearer.
