Newport City started their pre-season preparations in style following a five star performance against Lliswerry. In what was a breezy but sunny afternoon, both sides aimed to dust off the cobwebs and build up their fitness ahead of the new campaign.
A bright start to the match saw Lliswerry seize the initiative as they took an early lead in the 10th minute. However City responded well to the setback and sent a couple of efforts narrowly wide of goal following a period of sustained pressure. City were eventually awarded for their efforts when they were awarded a penalty in the 30th minute following a foul by the Lliswerry ‘keeper on a triallist. City captain Paddy Pope struck the resulting spot kick into the top right hand corner of the net to level the score. Things soon got better for City just three minutes later when Owain Morgan struck an effort from the left side of the penalty area into the back of the net to put the Steelmen in front. City continued to press forward and were rewarded again in the 41st minute after a well worked team effort saw a triallist fire in a smart finish from the centre of the penalty area to extend their lead and ensured that the side entered the interval in full control.
The Steelmen continued to dominate the second half and constantly threatened the opposition defence as they looked to increase their lead. Lliswerry tried to find a way back into the game and saw a free kick drift narrowly wide over the bar from the edge of the penalty area. City sealed the victory with ten minutes remaining following a fine solo goal from another triallist who converted a curlling effort from the left hand edge of the six yard box. The Steelmen added a final sprinkle to the result in the 83rd minute when Jake Buckley thundered a super strike near the edge of the area into the back of the net to secure an impressive 5-1 victory.
Overall it was a satisfying day for Newport City and a good preparation for next week’s pre-season encounter against Cwmbrân Town.
